D'où son surnom « la cité phocéenne ». Son étymologie n'a jamais été étudiée en profondeur. Se référant à une épigraphe tenue à l'écart depuis sa découverte en 1845, l'auteur évoque la possibilité que Massalia ait été fondée par les Phéniciens ou par les Puniques. Son nom aurait des origines sémitiques et possède un sens attesté et par la Bible et par la stèle du roi moabite Mesha découverte en 1868.
