AFRICAN DIASPORA AND THE AFRO-GERMANS

Tomi Adeaga

Introduction
The African Diaspora is defined by a multiplicity of voices, which
have yielded a wide range of experiences rooted in the environments
from which they have sprung up. One of these voices is the Afro-
German one. Estimates of people of African descent in Germany
range from 300,000 to 500,000, but there is no concrete data on their
numbers. In this essay, the term Afro-German is used to define people
of German and African or African-American origin. The term was
coined after a group of Afro-German women came together at the
behest of the late African-American poet, Audre Lorde. She encouraged
these women to come out of the obscurity imposed on them by
German society and become visible. As a result of this, they documented
their history and experiences in the now famous book, Farbe
