CONFUCIAN RELATION AND CHINESE ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE

1. Introduction
This chapter is aimed to provide a brief description of Confucian
Relationalism and to discuss its application in understanding various types of
organizational culture in Chinese private or public business. The concept of
Confucian relationalism was proposed by Prof. Kwang-Kuo Hwang. In order
to illustrate the special features of Chinese social psychology, he adopted a
two-stage strategy to construct a global psychology with specific
consideration of Chinese cultural tradition. First, he constructed a formal
model of Face and Favor which is supposed to be universal and can be
applied to various culture (Hwang, 1987), then he used this model to analyze
the deep structure of Confucianism by the method of Confucian relationism
(Hwang, 1995, 2001). This approach enables him to demonstrate the
uniqueness of Chinese mentalities against the common background of a
