The author of this article is a Bulgarian national, who is currently in the final year of his Ph.D. studies at the European University Institute in Florence. The focus of his research is the democratisation of the postcommunist states of Eastern Europe, and particularly the process of consolidation of democracy, which presents a crucial phase in the evolution of the political systems of these countries.
