I want to reflect in this essay on the relationship between culture and interests. Although the relationship between the two factors is inherently complex and to a certain extent represents a classic chicken-and-egg problem, I argue that culture can ultimately thrive and be accepted by those to whom it is meant to appeal only if it respects the fundamental human interest and imperative of physical and economic survival. Similarly, peaceful coexistence across cultures can thrive only as long as the interacting cultures are mutually respectful of this essential imperative.
