The primary objective of this paper is to rehearse ways through which migration can contribute to cross-cultural dialogue through a rethinking of the notion of citizenship. In this respect, the paper the paper proposes the concept of "barzakh" as a metaphor for the rewrite of the notion of "citizenship." The purpose is also to reflect on cross-cultural interaction in unfamiliar ways and through unfamiliar meanings. The argument is that the metaphor of the barzakh opens alternative possibilities in the way we think about "citizenship" and relations along the Mediterranean rim. In its disruptive dimension, the barzakh undermines fixity and calls for imaginative revisionist reading of citizens, immigrants and states.
