The mainland of Norway covers approximately 324 000 km2 with a
population of about 4.3 millions. Large areas of the country are sparsely
populated or virtually unpopulated. About 3 % of the land is cultivated, 20 %
productive forest area and the remainder is for a large part mountainous
areas. The island group of Spitsbergen and the island of Jan Mayen, and the
