JOURNALISM NEW AND OLD: THE 1707 UNION DEBATE


This paper considers Scotland and its doubles in a temporal dimension by focusing on the reproduction in the first decade of the twenty-first century of texts originally generated and for the most part produced in the first decade of the eighteenth century, in both instances in Scotland. A series of articles published in the Scotsman newspaper to mark the tercentenary anniversary of the 1707 Union evocatively, and perhaps provocatively, titled, "Towards the Union", ran several times a week for three and a half months in late 2006 and early 2007.
