Even though foster families are known in most regions of the world, there are large varieties in practice and theory of foster care in different countries. This article offers an overview on the structures as well as the juridical framework of foster care in Germany. In addition, an overview on topics, methods, theories and results of german foster care research is offered presenting six important studies that have been published between 1930 and 2007. To conclude, the author presents the study of her own research group at the University of Siegen, gives insight into their methods and some first results and shows, how this research can provide a new perspective on foster care in theory and practice....
