This contribution is the result of some reflexions related to a national sociological research project (PRIN, 2004) coordinated by the University of Teramo about "Innovations within the local systems development of the Third Italy". In particular, it refers to the role local productions (above all foodfarming, wine, and handcraft) have had within local cultural development processes. The main goal of the research has been the analysis of the attempt this part of Italy is doing in order to elaborate and experience new models of local development which could give a new value to the sense of territory, after a model based on industrial development only has come to a halt.
