One form of Russia's participation in the process of globalization is regionalization - active international activity of Russian regions in border and in cross-border relations. Formation of a new federal state in a democratic manner has led to changes in relations between center and periphery within the state, subjects of the federation received a strong mandate to implement the foreign political and economic contacts. In the post-Soviet Russia regions' involvement in international relations become a large scale phenomenon and attracts the attention of scientists. There are two main, complementary to each other, approaches to the study of this process: politological and interdisciplinary. Politological approach (political regionalism) is based on an understanding of regions as administrative units within the state system.
