THE SEVEN FACES OF THE BRAZILIAN SOCIETY
Bernardo Sorj*
Introduction
During decades, theories produced by sociologists working in
advanced countries were "nationless", in the sense that case studies led
to analytical and conceptual developments, which, by definition, were a
contribution to the general understanding of modernity and of modem
society. On the other hand, theories produced by those working in or
on developed countries were considered to be determined by the time
and space of each case-study, their main task being to explain or to
measure the distance between actual reality and modem society, as
defined by Social Theory.
