ZANDE PROPHETESSES AT THE ARTICULATION OF LOCAL CULTURE AND WORLD RELIGION

Every Saturday and Sunday morning dozens of
villagers flock to a large, white, thatched building in the
village of N gouyo in Zandeland.1 They wear festive
clothes and carry a small stool on which they sit while
waiting outside the area around the building. The area is
marked off with white pebbles on the ground. This
"fence" has several entrances, two of which give onto
the road: one for women, girls and small children, the
other for men and boys. All sit in rows in front of their
